Current Read…

Hello Everyone,

I have not been feeling well, so I have not been reading as much as I would like. I am reading Unmentionables by Laurie Loewenstein, that I got from My Sister’s Books.

Tomorrow, I go to my first physical therapy session. I plan on finishing Can You Survive the Wonderful Wizard of Oz? By Ryan Jacobson.

In the coming weeks, I have several doctor appointments and tests. So help me pick my next doctor read:

Wait for Me by Sara Shepherd

The House of Eve by Sadequa Johnson

Too Hot to Handle by Tessa Bailey

What are you reading tonight?

A Quote to Begin the Night…

“I Dwell in Possibility.”

~Emily Dickinson

This is a title of a poem by Emily Dickinson. My first full collection of an author’s work, was a gift of Emily Dickinson’s poems, that I received years ago. Have you read her poems?

Sherlock Holmes

We are currently watching old episodes of Elementary, since all of our teams won this weekend. It got me thinking about all the Sherlock Holmes stories and Sherlock-esque tales that exist.

I love the show Elementary. I enjoyed the movie Enola Holmes, and look forward to the sequel. I could not finish the Robert Downey, Jr/Jude Law film. Growing up, I loved The Great Mouse Detective.

Of course, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a genuine classic. Charles Finch writes a series that I recommend to Sherlock fans. I could not finish The Seven Percent Solution by Nicholas Meyer, though I desperately wanted to love it. I recommend The Anatomist’s Apprentice by Tessa Harris. I want to read The Beekeeper’s Apprentice by Laurie R. King.

Do you enjoy Sherlock Holmes mysteries? What books/shows do you recommend?

A Quote to Begin the Night

“Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.”

~John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

Bookmail

Tis time to help me pick the next read.

Today, I received in the mail:

The Zero Night by Brian Freeman (a police procedural, part of the Jonathan Stride series)

The Forty Elephants by Erin Bledsoe (based on a true story if an all-female gang in London,1920s)

The Blackhouse by Carole Johnstone (a Scottish island psychological thriller)

The first two are new-to-me authors. The third, I read Mirrorland and loved it. Dark and twisty, indeed!

What would you pick first?

Baking Imperfect

By: Lottie Bedlow

Lottie Bedlow enjoyed baking and on a whim decided to enter a baking competition. Next thing she knows, she is starring in The Great British Bake Off 2020, and writing a cookbook. The cookbook is filled with her classic recipes and new ones created specifically for this book. Lottie hopes everyone will give baking a shot.

First, to answer the author’s question, yes I do read cookbook introductions. Second, let’s mention the adorable cracked egg drawings that represent the difficulty level for each recipe. There are, of course, gorgeous pictures of food, glossary of baking terms, and a list of what you will need before you begin your baking adventure. The recipes are easy-to-follow with helpful hand-written tips from the author. This book is great for beginners and dessert enthusiasts, alike.

My Mom and I enjoy watching baking shows, holiday versions, kid’s versions, etc. Baking is fun. I used to use it as a stress-release back in high school. Big exam, AP tests coming up, the kitchen would be filled that weekend with all sorts of desserts to be given to friends and family. I never viewed it as pressure, but then again, I was using it to distract myself. Now, I would get upset if something wasn’t quite right and that would have to stay behind and not be given to others, lol. (Funny thing is, I was not much of a sweets person.) I liked that this baking book, almost challenged you to accept the imperfections and flaws that happen with baking. The baking books I am used to following are very direct and don’t have much light-hearted wording. This was a lovely surprise.
