The Fury

By: Alex Michaelides

One privately-owned, secluded Greek Island. One former Hollywood starlet, her husband, her son, her almost mythical assistant, and two friends. The friends are a washed-up playwright, and a struggling theater actress. The only other person on the island, a hired-hand turned recluse. What could go wrong?

When Lana, decides her family and friends need to escape dreary London, and find the sun on her private island, almost everyone jumps at the chance to join in on the fun. However, their idyllic time comes to a crashing hault when a murder takes place, and everyone’s secrets are exposed. Is all what it seems on this majestic island? Or does ancient curses and myths of wind goddesses and madness take hold?

The relaxing nature of the narrator talking to an old friend, the reader, provides an easy-to-read mystery. While it takes a minute to get used to the dramatic flair of the storytelling, it fits the storyline perfectly. What else should a reader expect, when the main cast of characters are involved in theater. The author does a brilliant job, unveiling the story little bits at a time, backing up to events prior, to help lead the reader on the purposeful trail. There are a ton of miscues to fall victim to, in this hidden mystery. However if reader stays on their toes, they will hear the truth revealed in no time. A definite must-read for fans of Shakespeare.

I love psychological thrillers. I love anything Greek Mythology related, and I love books that talk about other books. So when one mixes classics, with Agatha Christie, with Greek Mythology, and the epic Shakespeare, what is not to love!!! The laid back nature of the narrator makes this an easy-to-read adventure. I know it is being marketed as a psycholigical thriller with whodunit aspects the likes of Christie, but I disagree. This is a dramatic play in novel form, à la Shakespeare. I am definitely glad I finally read this book. The cover deterred me for so long, too Orwellian for my taste, but the story was great. A nice vacation or hurricane read. I started it during the end of Tropical Storm Debby and rapidly finished this weekend after my doc appointment.
