To Finish or Not to Finish…

Hi Everyone,

To Finish, or Not to Finish… that is today’s question. When you stumble upon a book that you just can’t get into, do you power through or do you toss it aside for something more entertaining?

I have always been a firm believer of sticking it out. I always hope that a book will redeem itself. For instance, Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult had an incredibly slow beginning, but the ending made it a wonderful book! Astonish Me by Maggie Shipstead was written in a unique style that took time to get used to, but the ending still makes me want to scream. In all my years of reading, I have set aside a few handfuls of books and picked them up at later times to finish. There has only even been one that I have not been able to pick back up… and it has been almost 10 years…

Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris. I have read every book by this author, but I could not get into reading about Hannibal as a child. I figured it was because of the events going on in my life, so I set it aside. However, after 9 years, I can honestly say that I have never once thought, “Oh, I should pick this back up and give it another try!”

I have talked to numerous people who stick with the 50 page or 100 page rule. (Read at least 50 or 100 pages, and if you don’t like it… you stop reading!) As my To Be Read/Wish Lists keep piling up, I am beginning to wonder about this rule.

For those that abide by this rule, do you ever feel like you are missing something? Do you ever wonder about the books/characters that you abandoned? Or are you pleasantly grateful for more enjoyable reading time?

Enjoy!
