Interview:
Please tell everyone here a little bit about yourself and your work.
Hey everyone! I’m Susan Boyer, and I write the Liz Talbot Mystery Series. I’m originally from North Carolina, but have lived in South Carolina for nearly thirty years. I’ve had a lifelong love affair with books, mysteries in particular. But before I wrote them, my day job was in computer business systems. My husband, Jim, and I have four grown children. We live in the Upstate of South Carolina, but spend a good bit of time in the Lowcountry, near Charleston.
What inspired you to become an author?
My love of books and my overactive imagination.
It’s always the most recent one, I guess because I’m closest to it. So, for the moment, it’s Lowcountry Bonfire.
I chose the name Liz for my protagonist because I’ve always liked the name. I made her last name Talbot because I love Talbots ladies clothing stores. The other characters are a combination of names I like and names I run across in the newspaper, magazines, et cetera. Sometimes I check for popular names in a given year.
Liz is the most obvious choice, because she’s the person I might’ve been in an alternate reality. In some ways, we’re very much alike. But in other ways, my life choices and hers make us very different. I think my answer to this question might vary depending on the day I answer it. Some days t would be fun to be Moon Unit. Other days, being Calista would be fun. I think I’d have a hard time choosing just one.
Oh my. You mean like Colleen? I guess that would be one of my grandmothers. Both of them were very influential in my childhood. That would also be a hard choice. They’d both be great.
I do. I’m working on the next Liz Talbot mystery. I’m under contract for four more books, and there will likely be still more after that.
I read very eclectically, and have so many favorite authors. A few, off the top of my head are Carl Hiaasen, Sue Grafton, Charlaine Harris, Joshilyn Jackson, and Mary Alice Monroe.
The ocean. I just love being near it. I love to just watch the waves.
My favorite summertime activity is… just jumping in the ocean and diving under a strong waves.
The Liz Talbot series is a great read all year round. It’s fun to read about Charleston even when it is cold outside.
Congratulations! You won. Please email me your mailing address.
My favorite thing to do in the summer is spending the day at the beach. I love the ocean and the feel of the hot sand!
