Book Summary:
Eden Durant hasn’t always been Eden Durant. She’s made a fresh start in Shelbyville, Texas, far from her mother’s notoriety. Running the Paradise Garden Café is as much excitement as Eden wants—or it was, until she meets Beck Childress. Although he’s the one man who could expose her past, she’s willing to open up enough to see if he might be her future.
Chief Deputy Childress is determined to get to know the real Eden, when he isn’t busy cleaning up after the sheriff and running in the election to replace him. When several men fall sick after eating in Eden’s café, he investigates even as her mysterious past raises both his suspicions and his protective instincts.
As their relationship heats up, so do the pressures of Beck’s campaign. When Eden’s secrets are revealed, jeopardizing his dream of becoming sheriff, he’ll need to choose: serve and protect the town he loves or the woman who makes it home.
Excerpt:
When Eden burst through the kitchen door a few minutes later, he grinned. She paused to refill coffee cups while balancing four plates on her left arm. Damned if Dolores, the longtime waitress over at the Skillet, wouldn’t have been proud. Eden stopped off at Charlie’s table and somehow served without missing a beat or dropping a sprig of that green crap she garnished the plates with.
Her dark hair was tamed into a thick braid starting at her crown and ending midway down her back. One day soon, her hair would be spread out on his pillow. And hopefully on his lap. Too damn bad she wasn’t wearing her see-through robe. Instead, she wore a pair of her god-awful overalls, a long-sleeved T-shirt the color of too-ripe bananas and those California-type suede boots. Except for the boots, everything she had on was probably at least one size too big.
In all her dashing back and forth, little wisps of her hair had come loose from her braid and were falling down across her overall bib, curling around her left breast. Her chest was rising and falling rapidly, and now that he knew just how amazing those breasts were, he wanted to rip away that overall bib.
She finally headed toward him, and he jerked his stare away from her…buttons and buckles. Yeah, he was hot for those damned buttons. Her golden hazel eyes warmed as she smiled. The woman he’d once thought standoffish was actually cautious, and that was a trait he not only understood but appreciated. She was a hard worker and self-sufficient, but now it was clear she also needed the security that would allow her lighthearted nature to shine through. He could be that man for her. He would be that man for her.
“Sorry I forgot to take your order,” Eden said. “It’s been one of those mornings.”
Screw food. He was starving not only for what was behind all those ugly clothes, but also for more of her teasing. “Got anything on the menu today that’ll appeal to a guy like me?”
She tilted her head to the right, as if considering his question like a physicist might contemplate a mile-long equation. “I think I have just the thing for you.”
Oh, yeah, she did. He breathed through the lust cruising through him. They would get to that. Soon. He just needed a little time to get his sister squared away. “What’s…” he cleared his throat to keep his voice from cracking like a jacked-up fourteen-year-old, “…that?”
“A dish I call the redneck omelet.” She pursed her pouty little mouth and shifted her weight to cock a hip. “Lightly whipped eggs stuffed with chocolate, chopped beef jerky and processed cheese.”
“I’ll take two, then.” Damned if he didn’t like this side of her. The way she stood there laughing down at him made him want to shove the salt and pepper and silverware off the table, lift her onto it and have her for breakfast instead. That image had his dick twitching behind his fly. Not cool while he was in uniform. Still, he couldn’t smother his smile. “But only if you sprinkle corn nuts on top.”
She shook her head, closing her eyes as if the corn nuts had screwed the deal. “Would you settle for ham and cheese?”
“American?”
“Goat milk cheddar.”
“That is so wrong.”
“Ham only, then.”
“That’s boring.”
“Bet I can find something to spice it up for you.”
He caught her gaze and could’ve fried his own damn eggs on the heat waving between them. She wasn’t talking about jalapeños or habaneros. “California girls don’t have any idea how hot us Texas boys like it.”
