Hi Everyone,
I am currently reading, so I don’t have a review for you today, but it should be available early next week. For today’s post I thought we could have a nice discussion. You see, last weekend I watched The Time Traveler’s Wife for the first time. I remember when it first came out, and unfortunately it arrived in theaters after my friend and I had a horrible experience. My friend, Dawn, and I used to read everything and exchange books, and if it was turned into a movie we went and watched it together. Well we had each read My Sister’s Keeper and when the movie came out, we went and watched it. We were so mad and disappointed when we left the theater we made a vow never to go see a movie based off a book, except for the Harry Potter and the Twilight movies. So due to the unfortunate timing of the movie release of The Time Traveler’s Wife I had never seen it until last weekend when it was on cable. Even tough it had been several years since I have read the book, I thought they did a semi-decent job, and only changed a couple of distinct scenes. Now I know due to time restraints a movie can’t physically show the entire movie, but as long as they get the heart of the book right, I am usually happy. My Sister’s Keeper the movie, was such a horrible translation and everything was different, that it was a huge disappointment.
As you might have guessed I am a normally prefer books to movies. I do have just one exception, The Perfect Storm. I loved the movie! Which do you normally prefer, book or movie? Do you have an exception? Which is the best book-to-movie adaptation? (My choice, I think would have to be The Outsiders.) Which is the worst book-to-movie adaptation? (My choice is most definitely My Sister’s Keeper.)
I wish everyone a wonderful weekend and a happy Friday. Please stay safe this Labor Day weekend!
Enjoy!

I am normally a much bigger book fan than movie fan, although I have to say I was pleased with the film translation for “The Notebook,” even though they changed the ending. I actually liked it better!
Most people won’t watch movies with me anymore if I’ve read the book, because I spend most of the time yelling at the screen “THAT’S NOT HOW THAT HAPPENED!”
I would actually be interested in seeing “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” though, as I was a little disappointed in the book. I really enjoyed the premise, but the writing style just didn’t work for me for some reason.
Hi Andrea,
I haven’t seen “The Notebook” yet, but I enjoyed the book. sounds like you and I could watch movies together. I feel betrayed when the movie version changes things. I would love to watch “The Time Traveler’s Wife” minus the commercials, but overall it wasn’t a bad adaptation. When you watch it let me know what you think. The book I liked, but it was a little slow at times.
Enjoy!

I will definitely let you know. It’s on my list of movies to get to 🙂
It does sounds like we could watch movies together! I’m glad I’m not the only one out there who feels that way.
Have a great weekend!
Andrea
Good Morning Andrea,
I think we should start a program where book addicts can meet and complain about all the details the movies get wrong. It would be a nice way for others like us to not feel so alone. 🙂
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and have a wonderful day!

I would totally join that group!!
🙂
I loved “My Sisters Keeper” as I do most of Picoult’s books! She is a terribly amazing author and I love her characters.

Hi Scribbler,
I loved, loved, loved My Sister’s Keeper, and I agree that she is a very, talented author. I did not like the movie version, and found it to be an insult to fans of the book. They changed everything and deviated to far away from the book. Have you seen the movie? If so, what is your opinion of the adaptation?
Thanks for the comment,
~Ariesgrl
I have seen the movie. I did not like the fact that they changed who died because it took away the poignancy of the book and the underlying theme that life throws unexpected curves and is certainly not predictable. However, I did like the movie, just not as an adaption of the book. More so as a different work entirely. I do like the book better though!
Adieu, scribbler
I am not saying it was a horrible movie. It was emotionally powerful. I am saying it did a horrible job as an adaption of a powerful, poignant book. I am glad to hear you enjoyed both versions. *P.S. Please be careful with spoiling the details for those who have yet had the oppurtunity to enjoy either version yet.
Thanks for your comments, and have a wonderful day!
