Grey Magic

By Erin Elizabeth Long. Format: eBook. Read: August 2012.

Erin Elizabeth Long tells the ancient story of good versus evil, but in a land full of Wizards and Sorcerers. The story begins by introducing readers to the main character, Grimoire Tobin, and her destiny. Grimoire is a young woman who spends most of her time reading. She lives with her Uncle Victor and her cat Sable. There was a war between Wizards and Sorcerers fifteen years ago, in which the white magic Wizards destroyed the black magic Sorcerers, or so the world thinks. Uncle Victor will not allow his niece to study any books related to the War. This is the story of how Grimoire matures, makes a best friend in Lark Wayland, and most importantly learns the truth about the past. Grimoire is very sure of the line that defines good versus bad, and she is even more clear on the fact that no one should ever cross that line. As she travels around Isenland, she realizes she could be wrong.

Erin Elizabeth Long has done a wonderful job creating a fantasy world full of intriguing characters. Her book is full of descriptions that will place the readers right in the middle of Grimoire’s world. The beginning is a tad slow as it sets-up the characters, the history and the setting. However, around Chapter Twelve the momentum picks up, and readers will be quickly flipping through the pages until the end. Fans of Young Adult Fantasy/Sci-Fi novels will enjoy this book, and will anxiously await the next book in this trilogy series.

Grimoire believes in the line that divides good and evil, but she grows to learn that the world needs balance. Do you believe that there is a line that should never be crossed? What books have you read that defend this line? Do you think there are certain circumstances when it is okay to cross the line? What books out there stress a more blurry or forgiving line?

Enjoy!
