Taylor McClellan is grateful for his wife, Harper, his home and his family. During this special Christmas, he reflects on his first Christmas at home, after being injured in Afghanistan. Five years ago, Taylor was released from the hospital, yet he knew his brain was still not well. His mother, Jenny, was thrilled to have her son home and wanted to have the best Christmas ever. Miller, Taylor’s younger brother, only wanted a puppy for Christmas. The Summer’s End

Summer's End

By: Mary Alice Monroe

(Lowcountry Summer #3)

The Summer’s End is the final chapter in the Lowcountry Summer trilogy. Harper, Dora and Carson, three half-sisters, have been staying at their grandmother’s home, Sea Breeze, in Sullivan’s Island. It has been a tumultuous few weeks, with the sisters reconnecting and finding not only the bond of sisterhood, but also rediscovering themselves along the way. But now the summer is coming to an end, the sisters must figure out where and how they will live, as their beloved home will be placed on the market. Will their bond last without Sea Breeze and Mamaw?

Mary Alice Monroe is an exquisite author who blends the magnificent Lowcountry setting with human emotions. Though this story works well as a stand-alone, readers will gain more from it if they read the trilogy in order. Teaching important lessons of the dangers humans impose on wildlife, as well as sensitive topics concerning Asperger’s and Wounded Warriors, this is a great choice for discussions amongst Reading Groups and families. The focus in The Summer’s End is finding oneself, and having confidence to pursue one’s dreams. Though this final book is mostly Harper’s story, as she transitions from a mousey observer to an energetic leader, readers won’t be missing out on any of the sisters’ developments. This is a must read for fans of Southern literature.

Several days after finishing The Summer End, I kept going back and re-reading my favorite sections. Harper was my favorite character; I mean who wouldn’t love a girl who lists classic titles as her best friends! Though this series was my first glimpse into Mary Alice Monroe’s writing, it won’t be my last.

Enjoy!

The Summer Wind

The Summer Wind

By: Mary Alice Monroe

Lowcountry Summer #2

It has been one chaotic month for Mamaw’s Summer Girls. Dora, the eldest, is beyond stressed with her separation, getting the repairs done on her ex-house, and trying to get her autistic son to move past Delphine’s injuries. With the help of Mamaw, Lucille and her sisters, Dora learns to shift focus back on herself and her health.

Carrying on the same theme from the first book, of the healing powers of nature, The Summer Wind shows the importance of learning to love one’s self, trusting others and the power of second chances. Mary Alice Monroe packs a punch with relatable characters and realistic life events. Life doesn’t wait for anyone; therefore one must keep putting one foot in front of the other and move forward. The ending will have readers frantic for the next book.

I could completely relate to Dora. I understood how she lost herself by trying to be the thing everyone else needed. It was nice to see her regain focus on herself and begin to accept being happy.

Enjoy!

The Summer Girls

The Summer Girls Cover

By: Mary Alice Monroe

Lowcountry Summer #1

Three sisters at various stages of life, separated by time and distance, are summoned to their Grandmother’s home to celebrate her birthday. Little do they know, Mamaw has plans to make sure they spend the entire summer with her in their family home, before she places it on the market. Carson Muir has spent her entire life bouncing from one place to the other, and the only place she has ever felt safe is Sea Breeze. Currently without a job and feeling lost, she jumps at the chance to spend time with Mamaw and reconnect with the Atlantic Ocean.

The beautiful setting of Sullivan’s Island provides the backdrop of this series. Told from the points-of-view from each of these four strong women, the story ebbs and flows like the tide. Nature is a powerful healing agent for the soul, but in return humans must respect the rules to protect the wild. This book focuses on accepting the past, accepting and providing forgiveness and learning when to ask for help. Fans of Mary Alice Monroe will be delighted to see old friends from her previous series. Readers will learn about the dangers humans impose on wildlife and will have a desire to reach out and help raise awareness about dolphin advocacy. The Summer Girls is a powerful and poignant start to a promising series.

Enjoy!
