Let’s Discuss… Goodreads

Good Morning Everyone,

I have been wondering about a few different topics and I wanted to get your opinions on these subjects. Today, the topic is Goodreads.

My friend Dana, recommended this site a little over a year ago. I joined it and within a few months, I was addicted! I love the quizzes and giveaways, plus the quotes (several of which have reappeared here as the quote of the day!) But I also enjoy the interaction between authors and readers. I know for a fact that my ‘Read’ list does not include everything that I have ever read, nor does my ‘To Read’ list contain everything my heart wishes to read. However I do keep an accurate track for my ‘Currently Reading’ list. This list contains books that I started last year, prior to me starting my website, and never finished. I know where they are at in my house and occasionally when I am in that room I read a couple of pages here and there, but overall they are just sitting and waiting. This list also contains the books that I am reading for this website and for the bookstore. However I am horrible about entering the exact page numbers that I am currently on. The authors and readers that I follow tend to vary on whether or not they add page numbers. I don’t normally follow the page they are on, but tend to follow what book they are reading. What about you? Are you a member of Goodreads? Do you prefer people who inform you of the page they are on or do you just care about the book and then their review? What are you currently reading?

As for me, today I am going to try and finish reading book number 31 from The List and book number 4 on My Sister’s Book List. I hope to have both reviews typed at some point tomorrow. Sorry I can’t give a more specific time, I have appointments throughout the day today and tomorrow.

Hope you all have a terrific Tuesday!
Enjoy!

Quotes and Life

Hi Everyone,

I have been asked two questions here lately. Where do I get my quotes? and Why do I pick certain ones to post? So I wanted to take a few minutes and talk about these quotes. Some of them come from sites like, Goodreads, while others have been given to me as suggestions. I always try to choose a quote that relates to reading and/or writing and/or books. Sometimes I may choose a quote that is from an author, but pertains to life itself. No matter where the quotes come from or what it is about, I must feel it in my soul. It must describe/summarize the feelings I have toward a subject. That is all. I hope you are enjoying them and if you have any suggestions for quotes, please feel free to share.

As you may have noticed, the quotes from this week have pertained to life rather than about reading or writing. As you may not know, I experienced a sort of anniversary this week. It has been officially one year since I became a full-time 24/7 caregiver. It has been a rather unique year with several ups and downs and bumps along the way; but each day is a new day and each day provides new lessons to be learned. Right now, I want to learn something from some of you, if that is okay. I want to know how do you all find time to write, paint, read, etc. at home. How do you work from home? Do you have set hours in each day that are your work hours? Do you have a room that is your work room, where you can’t be disturbed? You see. being a full-time caregiver means that I can’t go run and hide and read to my heart’s content. I have to be visible 24/7 and helping my family. Even as I type this post, I can think of about 15 chore-related items that I could be doing, instead of taking time to work on my blog.

But that is just it: I am, in my own way, working. I am reading and writing reviews and communicating with each of you. No it is not going out of the house from the hours of 9-5 and working in an established business, but it is work from the couch, while my grandfather and the boys are napping. While everyone is awake I work on house chores or family stuff, but then during those quiet moments I quickly take advantage of that time whether online or with a book. Yet no matter which aspect of my life I am focused on in the moment, my mind and heart feel that I may be neglecting the other aspects.

So how do you do everything? How do you balance family life with work? Do you ever wish there was more of you in order to make everything the top priority in your life? Or do you just try to designate days and/or hours and prioritize each thing in turn?

Oh and just so you know, I have a few more posts I will be typing up today. I have tried something new this week. As an idea/quote/blog topic pops into my head, I write it down on a list, so that during times like this I can just type away! Hope you all are having a wonderful and relaxing day!

Enjoy!

Social Media Updates and a Birthday

Hello Everyone,

I finally had the ability to update my Goodreads page with the reviews I have written! I also posted the reviews on Barnes and Noble’s website. This would be the good news. The bad news is that I am still having some difficulties getting Goodreads to cross over to this website. Also, it seems to pick and choose which updates it will send to Twitter. Other than that the only other issue I am having is trying to figure out a way to have Facebook and Twitter connect. If anyone has any advice on how to fix these two issues, I would appreciate it.
On a lighter note, I want to wish a Happy Birthday to the United States Marine Corps! Thank you to everyone who has served, is serving and will serve in the future. Thank you to all of their families, too. Have a great day everyone!

Enjoy!

Vision, Awards and More…

Hi Everyone,

As I mentioned in the last post, I have a concussion but I have been taking time to try to let it heal. The healing process apparently means lots of naps, but life doesn’t always allow for napping. However, my vision is no longer blurry and I have been able to read in short sessions. I haven’t been able to drive as of yet, so for the authors who have sent their books to me in the mail, please be patient; I hope to be able to go to the Post Office tomorrow. Thanks again. Since my vision is back and since I am not the kind of person who can just not do anything I signed up for Twitter and LinkedIn. I have added the Twitter link to the My Other Sites page. That page will be going through a major makeover later this week, hopefully.

The reviews that are pending on Goodreads, Smashwords and BN.com will be updated later today. I have finished reading book #19 on The List page and will be posting my review for it tomorrow. However I am going to post it in a different method. I will post it first on Goodreads and it should then cross over to this site. I then want you all to tell me which style you prefer. I am testing this method because I think it will benefit the authors, since it takes me a little while before I can place my review on Goodreads. Please remember it is a test and the overall majority will decide if I continue that process in the future. Then I will start reading #14 on The List as the author was kind enough to send a copy through the mail system after I had experienced so many technical difficulties.

Now on to the humbling and awkward award acceptance. Over the past two months this website was nominated for three awards. I am completely shocked and humbled by this action. It is because of all of you that this website is surviving and each of you help feed my dream of professionally writing reviews. Thank you. So, let’s begin:

1. Thank you to Invisible Ink for nominating me with the One Lovely Blog Award. Now she actually nominated me for this award back in September, but thanks to my crazy life I accidentally set it aside and never properly thanked her. For this I apologize to Whitney Carter and thank her dearly. Now since I have already been nominated for this award, I thought I would take this time to tell you all why you should check out her blog. She is an author and a blogger and she has several WIPs and blogs to show for it. She writes primarily in the fiction-fantasy genre, but her blog Invisible Ink offers several writing tips for new authors. Be sure to check out her website.

2. Thank you to Dana Zalesky for nominating me for the One Lovely Blog Award. Thank you Dana. I am going to take this time to tell you all about Dana’s blog. Not only is Dana a nice person and a beyond wonderful friend, she is an amazingly talented artist. I know I don’t know much about art, (I can’t even draw a stick figure, shh) but Dana’s talent is breath-taking. She has set-up her blog to show pieces she is working on, such as mermaids and pixies, in hopes of finding a career in this field. Again, I am in awe at her work, please go check out her website.

3. Thank you to Emily Guido for nominating me for A Beautiful Blogger Award. Thank you Emily. I was previously nominated for this award, and I am shocked that I have been honored with it again. Emily Guido is the author of “The Light-Bearer Series.” I have read and reviewed the first two books and just finished reading the third. This series is a wonderful story of accepting the differences in each other using sci-fi characters in a modern world. Visit her website for snippets, trailers and much, much more.

I am completely humbled by these awards and thank each of the talented and amazing bloggers. Also I want to thank each of you for your support.

I have exciting news to share with all of you. The Man in the Box is a book that I had the opportunity to read and review a couple of months ago. It will be released to the public on November 30 , 2012, and to celebrate the author, Andrew Toy, is holding a fun photo contest on the book’s Facebook page. To read the first few chapters visit Andrew Toy’s website.

Lastly, I hope everyone is home safe and sound this weekend. However many people lost everything when Hurricane Sandy hit the Northeast earlier this week. I am asking for everyone to help in any way possible. As you can guess I am unable to give financially but I can help spread the word and donate some items. My neighborhood, and many others, are holding clothing and food drives to help affected families. I know times are tough and not everyone can donate money, but we can all do a good deed and find a way to help others. Thank you.

For those who read this very, very, long post: I thank you. Happy Sunday Everyone!

Enjoy,
~Ariesgrl

Happy Monday!

Hi Everyone,

Thank you to everyone for their well wishes. I am starting to feel a bit better, problem with allergies is they linger for far too long. I haven’t been able to fall asleep yet so I thought I would write a quick post before catching up on my reading. I wanted to let you all know that the Ariesgrl Book Review Facebook page is up and running. If you are an author of one the books that I have reviewed, please feel free to “Like” the page and leave a comment with a link to your books or your site. I will be working on Goodreads and Smashwords this week and I hope to be able to post a link to my Smashwords page on here. For this early morning, I will just be reading. I am looking forward to having my review ready to post by the end of the week. Have a wonderful day and Happy October 1st!

Enjoy!
