A wildfire out of control…

His twin brother is dead and the only way National Intelligence officer, Mitch Holden, is going to make it through the holidays is by staying focused on his latest SCVC Taskforce investigation—catching a homegrown terrorist with a penchant for arson. The terrorist has started a wildfire eating up thousands of acres of forest and putting dozens of people in danger. When Mitch is pulled off that assignment to play bodyguard to a sexy forensic psychologist who sees past all his defenses, he ends up in the middle of a personal wildfire that’s as out of control as the one burning around the two of them.

A killer on the loose…

The trial that should have made her career cost Dr. Emma Collins everything—her home, her future, the baby that was growing inside her after she testified against famous actor Chris Goodsman, debunking his insanity defense and sending him to prison for murder. Rebuilding her life in the aftermath, Emma now rescues horses, dogs, and juvenile delinquents, and there’s no way she’s heading to a safe house because Chris Goodsman has escaped. She refuses to let anyone terrorize her or destroy her life again. But when a smart-talking, irresistible federal agent shows up insisting he has to protect her, she realizes her new bodyguard needs a bit of therapy. Good thing taking in lost causes happens to be her specialty.

Two people filled with grief may get burned…

Trapped at the ranch by the wildfire, Mitch and Emma explore a searing attraction, but soon discover they’re not alone. A killer has joined them—one who will do anything to get revenge and isn’t afraid to take out anyone who gets in his way.

Book Summary:

Eden Durant hasn’t always been Eden Durant. She’s made a fresh start in Shelbyville, Texas, far from her mother’s notoriety. Running the Paradise Garden Café is as much excitement as Eden wants—or it was, until she meets Beck Childress. Although he’s the one man who could expose her past, she’s willing to open up enough to see if he might be her future.

Chief Deputy Childress is determined to get to know the real Eden, when he isn’t busy cleaning up after the sheriff and running in the election to replace him. When several men fall sick after eating in Eden’s café, he investigates even as her mysterious past raises both his suspicions and his protective instincts.

As their relationship heats up, so do the pressures of Beck’s campaign. When Eden’s secrets are revealed, jeopardizing his dream of becoming sheriff, he’ll need to choose: serve and protect the town he loves or the woman who makes it home.

When Eden burst through the kitchen door a few minutes later, he grinned. She paused to refill coffee cups while balancing four plates on her left arm. Damned if Dolores, the longtime waitress over at the Skillet, wouldn’t have been proud. Eden stopped off at Charlie’s table and somehow served without missing a beat or dropping a sprig of that green crap she garnished the plates with.

Her dark hair was tamed into a thick braid starting at her crown and ending midway down her back. One day soon, her hair would be spread out on his pillow. And hopefully on his lap. Too damn bad she wasn’t wearing her see-through robe. Instead, she wore a pair of her god-awful overalls, a long-sleeved T-shirt the color of too-ripe bananas and those California-type suede boots. Except for the boots, everything she had on was probably at least one size too big.

In all her dashing back and forth, little wisps of her hair had come loose from her braid and were falling down across her overall bib, curling around her left breast. Her chest was rising and falling rapidly, and now that he knew just how amazing those breasts were, he wanted to rip away that overall bib.

She finally headed toward him, and he jerked his stare away from her…buttons and buckles. Yeah, he was hot for those damned buttons. Her golden hazel eyes warmed as she smiled. The woman he’d once thought standoffish was actually cautious, and that was a trait he not only understood but appreciated. She was a hard worker and self-sufficient, but now it was clear she also needed the security that would allow her lighthearted nature to shine through. He could be that man for her. He would be that man for her.

“Sorry I forgot to take your order,” Eden said. “It’s been one of those mornings.”

Screw food. He was starving not only for what was behind all those ugly clothes, but also for more of her teasing. “Got anything on the menu today that’ll appeal to a guy like me?”

She tilted her head to the right, as if considering his question like a physicist might contemplate a mile-long equation. “I think I have just the thing for you.”

Oh, yeah, she did. He breathed through the lust cruising through him. They would get to that. Soon. He just needed a little time to get his sister squared away. “What’s…” he cleared his throat to keep his voice from cracking like a jacked-up fourteen-year-old, “…that?”

“A dish I call the redneck omelet.” She pursed her pouty little mouth and shifted her weight to cock a hip. “Lightly whipped eggs stuffed with chocolate, chopped beef jerky and processed cheese.”

“I’ll take two, then.” Damned if he didn’t like this side of her. The way she stood there laughing down at him made him want to shove the salt and pepper and silverware off the table, lift her onto it and have her for breakfast instead. That image had his dick twitching behind his fly. Not cool while he was in uniform. Still, he couldn’t smother his smile. “But only if you sprinkle corn nuts on top.”

She shook her head, closing her eyes as if the corn nuts had screwed the deal. “Would you settle for ham and cheese?”

“Goat milk cheddar.”

“That is so wrong.”

“Ham only, then.”

“That’s boring.”

“Bet I can find something to spice it up for you.”

He caught her gaze and could’ve fried his own damn eggs on the heat waving between them. She wasn’t talking about jalapeños or habaneros. “California girls don’t have any idea how hot us Texas boys like it.”

Excerpt from THE DEFENDER

“You don’t have to walk me in,” Penny said to Russ while they waited for the elevator to scoop them up at the garage level of her condo building.

For the nine months Penny had lived in this building, she’d been a believer that the extra monthly fee—convenience tax, as she called it—for a building with a gated garage was worth it. Now, with Colin Heath threatening her, she was sure of it and would never again complain about shoes she could have bought with the convenience tax money. Even if the slow gate drove her mad, she remained thankful for its presence.

“This is a nice perk,” Russ said.

Casual conversation. That’s what this was because she knew that he knew that she knew they were both thinking the universe had royally flipped them off. After the crazy emotional day, one that included the two of them admitting their mutual attraction, the god of love decided this would be the night a judge received a death threat and the extra marshal assigned to Elizabeth Brooks would go to the judge.

Not wanting to leave Elizabeth with only one marshal, Russ and Brent decided Brent would stay behind while Russ drove Penny home. In the morning, Russ would return with Brent’s car.

All around a good plan because Elizabeth would be safe. However, Penny was about to step into the elevator leading to her condo—her very empty condo—with the FBI agent her girly parts wanted a piece of. Elizabeth was safe. Penny was not.

She rocked back and forth while the floors blinked off. The doors finally slid open and Russ held them so she could step on. A gentleman to boot. Could this get any worse?

“This is weird,” she said.

It wasn’t just her overthinking it. That was a relief at least. Still, that throb in her stomach wouldn’t quit. The entire ride home she’d felt the pressure, the expanding ball of nerves growing and growing and growing.

“Hey,” she said. “We’re professionals. We can handle this. What’s a little lust?” She nodded toward the elevator buttons. “Eighth floor, big guy.”

Russ laughed. “You really are insane.”

That would be one way to put it. “It’s true. Ask anyone.”

When the doors slid open again, Russ stuck his arm out to block Penny’s path, then checked the hallway. “All clear. Got your keys?”

“I do.”

“Let’s go.”

She stopped in the hallway outside the elevator and watched the doors close. He needed to be on that elevator. Away from her very empty apartment. Where she wanted to introduce him to an extremely inviting bed.

That throbbing mass in her stomach exploded. Big trouble. “You can go now.”

“Sorry, babe. Have to check the apartment.”

“You’re the one who said we’re professionals. Standard procedure. If Brent were here he’d do it. Last thing I need is not to do it and have you kidnapped. Although, you’re such a pain, they’d probably throw you back.”

He laughed at his own joke and Penny gasped, but really, there was a certain amount of pride she could take in scaring off would-be kidnappers. “Russell, I’ve said it before, flattery will get you everywhere.”

Particularly when it comes to my bed.

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

She spun, marched down the curving corridor and lamented the fact that the plush carpeting absorbed her footsteps. Sometimes a girl wanted to hear her own stomping and this carpet was stealing her fun.

What am I doing? Making herself crazy. That’s what. She shook her head to clear the madness, lightened her footsteps and breathed in. Professionals. They could handle it. She’d just let him do his little search while she locked herself in the closet where she couldn’t watch him entering her bedroom. Simple plan.

She focused on her apartment door just ahead. At this hour, most of her neighbors had gone quiet. Mr. Hanley’s television was still on, but that was normal since he was an insomniac. She unlocked the door, pushed it open and waved Russ in. Thank goodness she’d left the place neat.

He glanced around the living room. “You always leave the lights on?”

“Timer. I don’t like coming home to darkness.”

He nodded in that way that said he really didn’t have an opinion on that fact, but didn’t necessarily think it odd.

“You mind if I check the rooms?”

“Have at it. I’ll know if you go through my underwear drawer.”

His only answer was a grunt.

“I guess you could save that for next time, though.”

“I’m ignoring you,” he yelled from the bathroom.

Penny laughed and after the long day, laughing felt like that barrel of gummy bears she needed. She stood in the middle of her living room, pondered the closet door while he checked the two bedrooms. Maybe she wouldn’t actually get in the closet. If she just stared at it, it might be enough to keep her from seeing Russ in her bedroom.

“See anything of interest?” she called.

“Other than the bra you left on your bed?”

Oh, just hell. In a rush that morning, she’d taken the lacey bright pink bra off because—well—she didn’t know why. It just hadn’t felt right so she swapped it out for a plain beige one and obviously had forgotten to put the sex kitten one back in the drawer. Once again, the god of love had flipped her off. How could Penny have known Russell Voight would be escorting her home?

“I didn’t think I’d have company. In my bedroom.”

He stepped into the hallway. “Yeah, well, what’s another round of torture?”

Walking toward her, he stopped at the kitchen, smacked on the light, checked the miniscule pantry that a four-year-old wouldn’t fit in and turned the light off again.

Then he was in front of her, his tie loose and the button on his collar undone and if he looked tired, she couldn’t blame him. Even she, who functioned on very little sleep, needed her bed.

“I’ve got a marshal on his way here. He’ll stay outside your door tonight.”

“Thank you.”

For a second, she’d thought about arguing. Pretending to argue really because as much as she hated to give in to the fear and weakness of being Heath’s prey, the only way she’d sleep was if she knew someone would be there.

Except, this guy Heath, he was a slippery creep and she’d been around slippery creeps long enough to know how they operated.

“Russell, how well do you know these marshals?”

He eyed her. “Why?”

“Heath is insane, but he’s also brilliant. He seems to know my every move.”

“You think there’s a leak somewhere?”

“No. I don’t think that. I’m just…” She raised her hands, let them drop. “I don’t know. I’m tired.”

“Look, it’s a valid question. One I’ve thought of myself. I’m on it. Anyone involved in this case, we’re checking their financial records. If Heath has someone on his payroll, we’ll find them.”

She nodded. “It’s probably nothing.”

“Doesn’t hurt to look. I’m heading to the safe house in the morning. Assuming you want to be there?”

“Yes. I need to go to the office first.”

Russ scratched his stubbled chin. “That works. We want everything to look business-as-usual. I’ll pick you up at your office and then we’ll do some creative driving in case Heath is watching. That work?”

She rocked on her toes again. Here they were, two professionals, having a chat. No problem. Except the snapping energy in the silent apartment made heat fly off Russ in a constant and brutal wave. That wave would suck her under if she wasn’t careful.

She pointed to the door. “You should go.”

“I know.”

“Yet, he stands here. Unmoving.”

“Oh, I’m moved. Believe me.”

And still he didn’t budge. The only sound was the distant hum from the refrigerator and Penny concentrated on it rather than that damned loosened tie just begging to be stripped off. And then, the wave swooped in and, as if timed, they both stepped forward and Penny reached for his tie and tugged him to her. His hand slid around the back of her head and she went up on tiptoes, anticipating that first press of his lips. That first moment of their first kiss.

Welcome… Isobel Irons, Author!

Hi Everyone,

Please help me give a warm welcome to Isobel Irons. She kindly participated in an interview and is offering a giveaway for  a chance to win a free copy of her book!

1.       Hi Isobel! Thanks for stopping by the blog today. Can you please tell the followers here a bit about yourself and your work?

Absolutely! I’m something of a jack of all trades in the marketing and media realm. In college, I studied broadcasting and got really into independent film-making, then after I got married I traveled all over the world, working on various projects, collecting all these stories. It was only a matter of time before I started writing them down, first as spec scripts, then as novels.

I guess that’s what sets me apart in the publishing industry, because unlike most writers who outline and draft, I visualize and cast and storyboard my ideas before ever typing out the first words on the page. My first book WAKE FOR ME, was incepted (hehe) while watching Inception and chatting with my husband about how awesome it would be to stay in the dream world for long periods of time, until it started to become reality. My second book, which is an unrelated “mature YA” / New Adult contemporary retelling of Cinderella (but with way darker issues than housekeeping), is called PROMISCUOUS, and is kind of like Easy A meets Girls. (Not for the faint of heart, I promise.) I adapted that one from a set of journals I’d kept for a documentary on sexual abuse in America.

These days, I’m taking a break from standing behind the camera to write full time and do a podcast with my bestselling author friend, Elle Lothlorien, which is called the S&M (Self-Publishing and Marketing) Podcast with Maven & Minx (I’m Minx.) We also have a website, book and consultation firm where we teach people the attitudes and tools of successful self-publishing. You can read all about it at TheBookEscorts.com. *Shameless plug, sorry about that. The podcast is pretty funny, though, so if you’re an aspiring author you should definitely check it out.*

2.       Your book, Wake for Me, is about a young woman who finds the man of her dreams, while being in a coma. What inspired you to write this story?

Like I mentioned briefly above, the first seed was planted by Christopher Nolan’s Inception (he’s something of a hero of mine.) I loved the idea of lucid dreaming—of dreams you could learn to control, or at least be completely aware of—and thought it would be awesome to write a contemporary, non-paranormal retelling of Sleeping Beauty where the heroine was in a coma and forced to run around in a dream until she couldn’t tell the difference between that world and reality anymore. And of course, because I’ve always had a bit of a girly side, I had to make it a romance.

3.       The main character, Viola Bellerose, has a very unique name. How did you pick that name for her?

The main character’s name was a cross between my favorite character in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night(BTW in case you’re not familiar, Viola is the sassy and badass girl who dresses up like a dude and accidentally falls for her boss—such a kick ass story, especially for that time period) and yet another cheeky nod to the fact that WAKE FOR ME is loosely, loosely based on Sleeping Beauty. Bellerose…Briar Rose. Get it? There’s a couple of other sneaky references in there, which I won’t spoil for you here. But I LOVE it when readers message me on Facebook and tell me they’ve found them, my little Fairy Tale Easter Eggs. Hmmm, that gives me an idea: I might have to do a contest at some point in the future, centered around those little tidbits. (Psst. Friend me on Facebook if you want to be in the loop for such contests in the future.)

4.       Did you read a lot of romantic suspense novels growing up? What books/authors do you like to re-read often?

Oh, God, yes. When I was in college, I went through a huge phase where I just devoured everything I could get my hands on by Tami Hoag, Linda Howard, Suzanne Brockmann, Allison Brennan, Lisa Jackson…the list goes on, but I don’t want to bore you guys. Suffice it to say, I had a very unhealthy obsession with ‘Oh no, we almost died just then, let’s have sex’ scenes for a while, there.

Nowadays, though, I read pretty much everything. I beta read a lot for my fellow authors, too, which means on any given week I’ll be blitzing through some chick lit, some paranormal YA, some edgy NA books like the ones I write, and even a novel in verse (which is surprisingly easy to read, once you get the hang of it, and soooo beautifully written.)

Yeah, I love me some books.

5.       What are your writing plans for 2014? Will you be releasing any books this year?

My fellow authors like to laugh at me for my grand ambitions, but so far I’ve been averaging a book release a month. Can I keep this going? Probably not. But until the caffeine runs out of my system and my mind no longer buzzes with ideas for the next story, and the next, I’ll keep writing…until it kills me, probably.

*Ahem* And the non-crazed sounding answer to your question is, “Why yes. Thank you for asking. My next book, SAY ANYTHING (the ‘sequel’ to WAKE FOR ME, kind of) comes out in April 2014. Keep an eye on my website, isobelirons.com for updates!

Welcome… Author, Stacy Juba!!!

Good Morning Everyone,

I would like for you all to help me welcome author Stacy Juba. She is a very talented author of several different genres that I have had the pleasure of reading. To read my reviews click on the title of the book: Face-Off, Twenty-Five Years Ago Today, Sink or Swim, Dark Before Dawn, Teddy Bear Town Bundle.

I hope you all enjoy!

1. Hi Stacy, thanks for hanging out on the blog today. Could you please tell the followers here a little bit about yourself?

Thanks for hosting me! I’m a wife, mom, and former journalist for a daily newspaper. I have always loved to read books and write stories, and was writing my own “mystery series” in fifth grade. I have published books for adults, teenagers and children, and the one theme all the stories have in common is that the characters are at a crossroads in their lives. They are at a fork in the road where they can either stay on the safe and predictable path, which hasn’t been serving them too well, or take a new and riskier path toward a more fulfilling future. On my blog from time to time, the “reporter” in me likes to highlight resources that can help my readers to build their own characters, featuring topics such as meditation, parenting and self improvement. I have written a lot of health articles over the years for various publications, as health and wellness are personal interests of mine.

2. I read all sorts of genres, depending on my mood or what is on The List. What is it like for you, as a writer, to write various tales directed at different audiences?

I basically come up with book ideas based on the mood I’m in at the time. My upcoming novel, Fooling Around With Cinderella, is a light and sparkly romantic comedy/sweet romance. I just felt like writing something light and fun, and I see myself going more in that direction down the line. For Twenty-Five Years Ago Today, I wanted to write something more introspective with a “Wow” ending. I felt like surprising readers. With my reality TV mystery Sink or Swim, I wanted to write an entertaining and suspenseful beach read that was lighter than Twenty-Five Years Ago Today. The adult books come more naturally to me than the books for younger readers, but the teen and children’s books are a nice change of pace once in awhile. Writing about different characters and for different audiences keeps me from being bored. And if I’m having fun writing the story, I hope readers will have fun reading it.

3. What was the first children’s book you remember re-reading as a child?

I remember reading a Bobbsey Twins book called The Dune Buggy Mystery and thinking that I had to reread it as soon as I finished. Then I realized it was a series. I read all the series books I could find, such as The Bobbsey Twins, Happy Hollisters, Dana Girls, Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Judy Bolton, and Trixie Belden books as I could keep revisiting the same characters again and again. I also had a fondness for Beverly Cleary’s Ramona books and read those more than once.

4. Who are on your top list of must-read mystery authors?

I always look for new books by Lisa Gardner, Iris Johansen and Heather Graham. They fall more along the lines of romantic suspense. I also like Joann Fluke’s Hannah Swenson mysteries as they are light and quick reads (and they inspire me to bake!) and I’ve read most of Denise Swanson’s Scumble River Mysteries and Donna Andrews’ Meg Langslow series .

5. What can readers expect to see from you in the future?

They can look for my romantic comedy/sweet romance novel Fooling Around With Cinderella in 2014, and I plan to write spinoff stories featuring minor characters from the book. I also plan to work on my Face-Off sequel, Offsides, which I wrote when I was a teenager and need to rewrite, as well as finish a mystery novel that was a recipient of the William F. Deeck Malice Domestic Grant which was presented at the Agatha Awards. I have a lot of ideas to keep me busy!

Bonus Questions:

1. Top Teenage Detective?

a. Nancy Drew

b. The Hardy Boys

c. Trizie Belden

d. Other

2. If you could have any one/two of the sixth senses, which would it be?

Welcome… Sage Ardman, Author!

Good Morning, Sage. Thank you for being here today. Can you please tell everyone here a little bit about yourself?

I’m 60 years old, married, and have two sons in their twenties, both of whom have left the nest. I live in California, but spend every summer in Ontario, canoeing and enjoying the beautiful waters.
I have always been a huge reader of fiction, but I never knew about romance novels until last year when I wrote “Executive Sweet”. At first, I started reading romance novels because it helped me write my book. But I soon fell in love with romances (well, most of them, anyway) and so far I’ve gobbled up 70 of them. I prefer contemporary adult, but I’ve read a few historical, paranormal, young adult, urban fantasy, etc.
So what was I doing with myself for the 59 years before romance grabbed me by the throat? I’ve been a computer programmer! These days, computers seem less and less interesting, and I spend all my time reading and writing romance.

Executive Sweet is a romance novel. What inspired you to take the leap into writing in the romance genre?

“Executive Sweet” was the result of a huge “what if” question. What if (I asked myself) a CEO intentionally tried to distract his adversaries by bringing a beautiful woman with him whose job was to tilt the negotiation in their favor? Besides being sexy, the woman would have to be business savvy, and also quite adept at playing such a “con game.” At first, I wrote some vignettes about these sorts of business deals. But then, I realized that the love interest would be compelling, and so the vignettes got woven into a romance novel. Although this seems to have a pretty standard “CEO and beautiful woman” formula, it is nothing like the other romances in that category (I know, I’ve searched in vain). In my case, the two of them start off as friendly colleagues, and the hero is much more modest (the usual attitude such men have is that they’re more powerful than everything else that walks the earth).

Your main character, Kay Samson, has found herself in an interesting business situation. Would you have the same confidence as her, if faced in a similar scenario?

One of the things that I did to prepare myself to write “Executive Sweet” was to learn about con games. I’ve read books, watched TV shows, and seen a number of movies. It takes some serious nerve to be able to pull that stuff off, and as much as I wish I could do it, I doubt I’d be able to.

What is your perfect reading/writing day?

I prefer writing to reading, so my perfect day is when I get to work on new material. The characters seem to live in my head, and I can sit for hours, typing dialog that I hear them saying. Later on, I go back over the dialog and add inner thoughts, emotions, and physical actions.

When I’m not writing, I read and read. I can sit for hours reading. And ever since EBook readers came on the market, I’m in love with them. In fact, when I’m forced to read a paper book, I hate it, and can’t wait to finish it.

Besides Executive Sweet, are there other books that you have written or books that you plan on writing soon?

It turns out that “Executive Sweet” is the first of a 3-book series that I’m now calling the “Westerley” series. Book two is nearly done and I expect it in a few months. Book three is already taking shape in my head. All three books share the same characters, but stand on their own as romances. The nice part is that they fill-in for each other, providing further character development, and sometimes even replaying a scene from a different point of view.

One thing that I’m doing (that I hope doesn’t alienate my readers) is that I’m switching genres with each book in the series. “Executive Sweet” is mostly a suspense story. Book two (tentatively titled “A Good Little Girl Like You”, a line from The Wizard of Oz) is a comedy. Book three (no working title yet) will be a paranormal romance.

Now if you want to go backwards in time, before “Executive Sweet,” you will find that I’ve written two other books. But they’re computer books, and believe me, you don’t want to read them. I know I don’t.

Welcome… Leanora Moore, Author!

Hi Leanora, thank you for joining us today. Could you please tell the followers here a little bit about yourself and your books?

Thank you for having me! As you may know my name is Leanora Moore, and I’m a romance author. I have four romance novels out in stores now. My first novel is titled The Caress of a Younger Man, which I released in 2009. Then you have my second novel, Heavenly Kingdom, which was released in 2012. Then in 2013, I started my Voluptuously Curvy and Loving It Series, and in February is released Smooth As Silk, to be followed by Finding Love Within in August.

You mention in your bio that you used to write your dreams and fantasies down in a notebook, when you were little? Do you still have your notebooks? Were they filled with fairytales and princes?

Yes, I do still have those notebooks, and I still write in them to this day. They are filled with romance of all kinds, such as plus size heroine love stories, Damsel in distress love stories. I just love all kinds of happy endings.

If you could meet up with your younger self, what advice would give her, or what part of her would she help you reconnect with?

If I could meet up with my younger self, I would tell myself not to listen to all the negative people in my life that held me back from reaching my dreams for so many years. Also live each day like it’s your last!

You have a series, called “Voluptuously Curvy and Loving It.” As a woman who has always had more curves than most of her friends, I find stories with a fuller figured heroine enticing. What was the motive behind writing a series that women could not only relate to, but also (hopefully) learn to accept their own body shape?

As a plus size woman myself, I know how hard it can be to accept yourself, and be accepted by others. I also know how we can let self-doubt and low self-esteem keep us from finding true happiness and love. So when I created this series, I wanted to write about women that everyone can relate to, and to show women that you can find love no matter what size, shape, or color you are.

You have recently released book number 2 in the Voluptuously Curvy and Loving it Series. Are there any more works lined up in your future?

Yes there is, right now I’m working on Volume Three, Her Forgotten Lover. Which will be released in January 2014, so be on the lookout for it.
